Briquette Manufacturing
Over the last decades, gigantic deforestation has been waged against the Gambian flora and forest cover, which means that The Gambia is currently on the brink of, not only deforestation and desertification, but also a formidable energy crisis. Currently, around 75 per cent of all Gambian households depend on firewood and charcoal.
To tackle this issue GAMSEM is currently leading a project focusing on using agricultural waste like peanut (groundnut) shells to manufacture fuel briquettes. A part from making an impact on deforestation through decreasing the dependence on firewood and charcoal, the project has the potential to create a new source of income for subsistence peanut farmers.
